Duffield Associates, Inc. has provided professional services to the Port of Wilmington on multiple projects including Berth 7 which is a 330 ft berth along the Christina River, as well as the Multi-Purpose Wharf and Causeway which is 875 ft and is the one and only foray onto the Delaware River.

Each project began with a feasibility study which assessed alternative construction types and included cost estimates to obtain funding. These studies involved: bathymetric surveys; subsurface exploration, including land and water-based borings and soil/environmental sampling to address both geotechnical and environmental issues; location and configuration of the proposed berth, including performing sediment transport analyses to determine initial and maintenance dredging requirements; evaluation of dredging material disposal options/sites; preliminary design of site roadways, access causeways, and dock structure; identification of submerged cultural resources and other environmental permitting issues, including wetland area identification and mitigation; aquatic habitat mitigation, full permitting and regulatory agency liaison; a public meeting and preparation of a preliminary construction cost estimate.

Duffield Associates was the prime consultant for Berth 7, which included foundations, superstructure, mechanical systems, access, mooring, fendering, cathodic protection and fire suppression. The multi-purpose berth design included the same scope, but was done in conjunction with one of our principal partner on this project, Moffatt Nichol.  The location and orientation/configuration of the Multi-Purpose wharf was developed to eliminate both initial and long-term maintenance dredging.

Following completion of the initial construction in 1990 and 2002, respectively, Duffield Associates has been retained by the DSPC and their engineers and contractors to provide additional design and construction review services related to the 17-acre paved parking lot and a new mooring dolphin configurations to expand capacity.
