A new school campus was proposed on an approximately 270-acre parcel is proposed to be constructed in phases and will include preschool, elementary, middle and high school buildings and facilities, was proposed to be constructed in several phases. Additional site features such as athletic fields, a stadium, parking, outdoor classroom areas and an auditorium were also proposed for the campus. The geotechnical evaluation was performed in phases, to coordinate with the efforts of the design team in concept, preliminary and final design stages of the various campus elements. Several areas of compressible soils were encountered at the site, which created potential building settlement issues for the proposed structures and utilities at the site. Duffield’s geotechnical engineers worked with the project team to come up with a cost-effective approach involving surcharging which ultimately allowed the use of a conventional spread footing foundation system for the structures, instead of a more costly deep foundation approach.
