Project Description

The Elutherian Mills Dam, located on the Brandywine River, was first established by the DuPont family who harnessed the river’s power for the production of gun powder. Because of it’s deteriorating condition and historical significance the Hagley Museum and Library was interested in restoring the deteriorated dam to its historical configuration. Duffield Associates conducted a field review, permitting, and historical investigation to determine how the dam might have been constructed in the 1800s and 1900s. Because of Duffield’s successful and historically-minded repairs, this project won the 2010 New Castle County Historic Preservation Award for Industrial Technology Restoration.
