HSW was contracted by Southwest Florida Water Management District to evaluate the thermal and salinity regimes in Homosassa River. The evaluation was performed using two approaches – numerical modeling and statistical modeling. The numerical approach involved calibrating a hydrodynamic model of the Homosassa River system using the public domain three-dimensional hydrodynamic code known as the Environmental Fluid Dynamics Code (EFDC). The calibrated model was used to evaluate potential loss of salinity and thermal habitats resulting from specified reductions in flow from the headwaters of the Homosassa River. Statistical models were developed and used to estimate salinity as function of freshwater discharge and location and to calculate downstream salinity boundary conditions for EFDC.
