Wilmington Harbor North Confined Disposal Facility is a 160 acre site with an underlying deep formation of soft, unconsolidated soils incapable of supporting long term use without major improvements. The site had been actively used as a disposal area for dredged materials from Wilmington Harbor for over 80 years. However the useful life of the facility was projected to be less than 5 years. Initially, a conceptual evaluation was performed to determine the feasibility of extending the useful life of the facility to satisfy short and long term operational requirements associated with the dredging of Wilmington Harbor. Once it was determined that dike construction to meet short term operational requirements was feasible, Duffield provided the USACE with complete engineering design as well as construction plans and specifications within 120 days of the initial notice to proceed.
